It was a successful final week of the season for Coach Jeff Davidson and his Pioneer Ridge Middle School eighth-grade girl varsity team with wins against Paola Middle School and Wheatridge Middle School.
In a close 30-24 win against Paola, Pioneer got nine points from Emma Prothe and six points from Gabby Schultz. Taylor Fergola and Katie Whittley each scored five points, while Jaden Sprague, Sydney Wetherington and Kelby Wilson, netted two apiece.
Pioneer, 11-5, trailed Paola 8-5 after one quarter and 15-11 after halftime. The Jags took control in the third quarter, outscoring Paola 13-0, and coasting to victory.
“We did not start the game off with focus, but he regrouped and played some good basketball down the stretch,” said Coach Jeff Davidson.
In the season finale, Pioneer posted a 34-12 win against Wheatridge.
Schultz led the way scoring eight, first quarter points to put Pioneer up 12-2 after one quarter.
“Gabby hit her first six shots,” added Davidson. “Her teammates recognized that and found her in the offensive pattern.”
By halftime, Pioneer owned a 24-8 lead and added an 11th win of the season. Beside Schultz, Sprague added seven points, and Prothe added five. Wetherington scored four and Fergola and Whittley each netted two.
“The Jags had a great year, took third in league and finished with an 11-5 record,” said Davidson. “The coaches want to thank the parents for their support throughout the year.”
