Thelma D. Stokes, 89, passed away Dec 11, 2014 at her home in Lenexa. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Friday, Dec 19, 2014 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS 913-856-7111. Graveside will follow, 1:30 pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am before the service at the funeral home. Thelma was born April 2, 1925 in Enterprise, Ala. to Lillie Viola (Allums) and Shelly Lee Murdock. She grew up in Alabama. Thelma married Jesse E. Stokes on Oct 13, 1943 in Dothan, Ala.Stokes3. They traveled the world with the U S Navy, settling in Gardner in 1950. She was a member of the Gardner Eastern Star, the Ruby Slippers and the Feisty Friends groups of the Red Hat Society, and the Crafty Crew EHU in Gardner. Her family says that she did every craft known to man and woman. Thelma volunteered for Meadowbrook Hospital, the Gardner Senior Center and the Gardner Historical Museum for many years. She served as the Grand Worthy Matron of Job’s Daughters. She loved spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren. Thelma will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jesse in 1991, a granddaughter, two sisters and four brothers. Thelma is survived by children: Carol Ann Page of Leavenworth, KS, James Donald Stokes (Glenda) of Pomona, KS, Duane Neal Stokes (Cherie) of Sullivan, MO and Deborah Denise Smith (Corey) of Basehor, KS; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sisters Bessie Kelley and Pearl Hernandez and brother Coy Murdock, all of Alabama.
