After nearly three weeks of practice, the Gardner Edgerton High School Blazer boys basketball team will open the season at home against the Mill Valley High School Jags this week.
Six seniors return led by point guard Brett Wright. Wright averaged 10.4 points and four assists per game last year.
Another top returner is senior Kyle Hultgren, who averaged 16 points and eight rebounds last season. Senior newcomer Nash Bostwick, at 6-foot, 3-inches, will give the Blazers a nice inside-outside player.
Other senior contributors will be Jacob Haywood, Jake Beckner and Jacob Lathrum.
GEHS Coach Jeff Langehr said the squad is a solid group.
“We will rely heavily on Brett, Kyle and Nash,” he said. “We will need the senior leadership and development of our underclassmen.”
Langehr said depth will be important, because the Eastern Kansas League is loaded this year.
Sophomore guard Devon Toomey returns after logging quality minutes last season. Sophomore Nate Wagner will see time as will defensive specialist Conner Boyt.
Front court depth will also come from sophomores Bryson Rohr and Jacob Garrett.
“As usual, we are undersized and will have to work hard to match up on the boards,” he said.
