It was a mixed bag for the junior varsity and varsity Wheatridge Middle School teams on Nov. 22.
The seventh grade junior varsity walked away from Spring Hill Middle School with a victory, but the seventh grade varsity fell short.
In the JV game, the WMS Mustangs trailed at the end of the first quarter, 5-6. However, the team came out strong in the second quarter scoring six points to Spring Hill’s zero. WMS went into the locker room at half time with an 11-6 lead.
At the end of the third quarter, WMS held a 15-10 lead. Spring Hill rattled off five straight points at the start of the fourth to tie the game with three minutes remaining.
However, WMS responded with eight points in the final minutes to seal the win.
Olivia Harms led the team in scoring with 13 points. Other scorers included Zoe Daniels with four points, and LeAnn Register, Caylie Waterman and Haley Mills each with two points.
In varsity play, the seventh graders fell to the Baldwin Middle School Bulldogs and Spring Hill Middle School.
The WMS Mustangs played the Bulldogs first, coming out slow in the first quarter. At the start of the second, WMS was down 5-17, but a 10-7 run by the Mustangs narrowed the score.
It wasn’t enough to pull off a win.
Baldwin won 46-25.
In a second game against Spring Hill, the WMS Mustangs were down 21-2 at halftime. The Mustangs rallied but fell short, losing to SHMS 31-16.
The eighth grade team also played Baldwin and Spring Hill on Nov. 22, losing to Baldwin 24-20 and beating Spring Hill.
Against Baldwin, Kaylee Cox lead WMS’ offense scoring eight points. Yeneth Lujan added four points, while Emily Mulberry chipped in two points.
In the second game of the day the team took on Spring Hill and ended with a 27-20 win.
The team was lead by Kaylee Norris with 18, Lujan chipped in six and Cox added in three.
