Robert Samuel “Bob” Reece, 80, a resident of the Forest Grove Community, died Sunday evening, November 16, 2014, at his home.
Bob was born on October 16, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of the late Dr. Adelbert Samuel and Ella (Thomen) Reece. He was raised and received his education in the Gardner, Kansas community, having been a graduate with the Gardner High School Class of 1952. Upon his graduation, he attended Kansas State University and later received his Master’s Degree in Education at the Colorado State Teacher’s College in Greeley, Colorado.
Bob was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Tye on November 2, 1956 in Miami, Oklahoma. They celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary this past November. Following their marriage, they made their home in Kansas City, Missouri until 1959, when they moved to the Forest Grove community, where they have resided since. Bob served as a teacher. In 1959, having taught for three years in Kansas City, he and his wife moved to the Forest Grove community where he taught at Lincoln Jr. High School and later for Neil Armstrong Middle School and Tom McCall Middle School. During his teaching career, he also coached soccer, basketball, track and women’s gymnastics teams. He retired in 1991 after thirty-three years with the Forest Grove School District. He was instrumental in bringing the game of soccer to the Willamette Valley. Bob served as the President of the Willamette Soccer League for many years.
He was a member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #2440 and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gardner, Kansas. Among his special interests, Bob enjoyed dancing, soccer, oil painting, backpacking, learning languages and traveling. What he loved most was time spent with his family and dancing with his wife.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Adelbert S. and Ella Reece. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy T. Reece, of the family home in Forest Grove, Ore; his five children and their spouses, Renee’ and Kevin Gould, of Forest Grove, Tamre’ Reece, of Clatskanie, Ore, Tia and Ken Grotjohn, of Vernonia, Ore, April and Bill Davis of Forest Grove, and Brandy Reece and her fiancee’ Josh Pate, of Cornelius, Ore; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomen and Cheryl Reece, of Olathe, Kan; and his two sisters, Katharine Curry, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Marilyn Wolf, of Gardner. Also surviving are his nine grandchildren: Brandon, Callen and Cameron, Alex, Jordan and Lauren, and Jescah, Bryce and Chelsea; his nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 138 East Shawnee Street in Gardner, with the Reverend Keith Koch, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial rites and interment will be held at the Gardner Cemetery, 300 block of Poplar Street in Gardner. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am Wednesday, November 26th, before the service at the church.
