Battling until the end, the Gardner Edgerton High School Blazer varsity football squad dropped a 45-17 decision to Blue Valley Northwest High School in second round district 6A action at the district stadium Friday night.
GEHS notched the scoreboard first on a touchdown run with 4:18 minutes left in the first quarter by senior quarterback Colton Mullin.
Back came Northwest on a Max Tierney touchdown run just 30 seconds later. That left the score at 7-7.
GEHS kept battling and went up 10-7 thanks to a second quarter 27-yard field goal by Jan Kubes. After the field goal, the Blazer defense stiffened and allowed just a field goal before halftime. Both teams went to intermission with 10 points on the board.
Northwest struck first in the third quarter on another Tierney touchdown.
Trailing 17-10, GEHS would not go away. The Blazers tied the score when Jadon Pearson-Bruce found fellow senior Tanner Hughes on a trick pass play with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
However, Northwest took control late in the third quarter when Zack Zegunis scored from 27 yards out. Tierney followed with another 5-yard touchdown and Northwest owned a 30-17 lead. The Huskies put the game away after returning a fumble for a touchdown minutes later.
The loss failed to overshadow top offensive efforts from seniors Mullin and Bruce and sophomore Zach Bass.
Now 0-8, GEHS’ chances for a sub-state berth are dashed. The team hopes to salvage a win at Olathe South High School Friday night in its final district action.
South is still smarting from a 49-0 drubbing by Blue Valley High School.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Olathe District Athletic Complex.
