The Wheatridge Middle School seventh grade JV volleyball team took second place in the Frontier League Tournament at Ottawa Middle school on Oct. 4.
Thanks to a strong team effort, the WMS Mustang squad beat Louisburg Middle School, 25-9 and 25-17, early in the day.
Jessica Morris and Taya Semon lead the team at the service line, while Lily Cecil and Kyla Johnson contributed defensively from the back row. Bella DeFrancesco netted one kill.
Next, the Mustangs took on Paola, winning 25-22 and 25-19. Lead by Mackenzie Minea and DeFrancesco at the service line and assisted in the passing game by Mackenzi Smith and Sophie Livella, the win launched the squad into the championship bracket.
In the first match of the championship  bracket, the Mustangs battled Ottawa.  WMS came away victorious with wins of 25-16 and 25-23.  The team was led in serving by Semon and Johnson and in passing by DeFranceso and Cecil.
The next match was a close one against Eudora Middle School, but the Mustangs won it in three, 19-25, 25-10 and 15-10.
In the championship match, the squad faced crosstown rival Pioneer Ridge Middle School. The ‘Stangs came up just short, losing to PRMS 22-25 and 24-25.
