Forest D. Laughlin, 95, of Olathe, passed away September 24, 2014 at Villa St. Francis.
Forest was born July 21, 1919 in Morse, Kan to Richard Forest and Le-Una (Lofton) Laughlin. He was a life-long area resident
Forest was drafted into the US Army and was shipped to Australia-New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Bougainville. During a 30-day furlough in 1944 Forest married Christine Podmarsky from Chicago, IL. In Dec. of 1944 he was shipped back to Leyte, Southern Philippines. Forest served in three campaigns in the 221st Field Artillery Battalion Service Battery “Americal Division” with the rank of Master Sgt, where he was in charge of all the vehicle maintenance. He served in the war 42 months and was in the Army for four years and 13 months.
After he was discharged, Forest ran Laughlin Excavating Co. for 46 years. He loved his work and the people he worked for.
In June of 1965 he married Maxine Atteberry from Paola, Kan. On July 31, 1993 Forest married Dorothy French from Overland Park, Kan.
Forest was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Olathe, the Wellsville Baptist Church and the Olathe Trail Riders. He enjoyed playing the guitar, loved dancing and riding horses. He will be missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Christine, in 1964; second wife, Maxine, in 1992 and siblings: Frank, Leon and Delbert Laughlin. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; daughter, Jeanne (Laird) Konker, Denver, Colo; step-children: Ricky French, Overland Park, Kan, Robin Smith, Leavenworth, Kan, Randy French, KCMO, Shirley Fort, Wellsville, Kan, Ron Atteberry, Topeka, Kan, Dennis Atteberry, Belton, MO, Max Atteberry, Ottawa, Kan and Don Atteberry, Shawnee, Kan; two grandchildren, Laura and John; many step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many great-step-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Sat., September 27, 2014 at Wellsville Baptist Church, 217 Main St., Wellsville, Kan. Burial 1:30 pm at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Overland Park, Kan.
