Scoring three, third quarter touchdowns, the Blue Valley Southwest High School Timberwolves posted a 45-28 Eastern Kansas League win against the visiting Trailblazers’ district stadium last Friday night.
Early on, it appeared Gardner Edgerton High School would make a game of it, the Blazers spotted Southwest a 7-0 lead before senior quarterback Colton Mullin made it 7-6 on a nice 71-yard scoring run.
Southwest went up 14-6 on a rushing touchdown minutes later.
Two touchdown runs from GEHS’ Jadon Pearson-Bruce put the Blazers in the driver’s seat with a 18-14 score. The lead was short-lived as the Timberwolves’ Ryan Peroo scored on a 65-yard run, giving Southwest 21-18 lead at the half.
Southwest began pulling away from the Blazers early in the third quarter. The Timberwolves scored on a 59-yard scoring run, followed by a second touchdown run, putting the score GEHS pulled within 10 points of Southwest on a Mullin touchdown-run late in the third quarter.
But Southwest answered with a Peroo touchdown run. A fourth-quarter Southwest interception and return for a touchdown by Cameron Barclay sealed the Timberwolf win.
The loss failed to overshadow top performances by Mullin and Bruce.
Mullin ran for two touchdowns and 146 yards, and Bruce had 236 yards and two touchdowns.
Now 0-3, GEHS returns to host Blue Valley West Friday night.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Gardner-Edgerton District Stadium.
