Before he was charged with three murders in Kansas City, Mo., last week, Brandon B. Howell, 34, served time in jail for a crime he committed in Gardner.
In 1999, Howell invaded a Gardner apartment complex, kidnapping, robbing and assaulting residents there. He was also charged with cruelty to animals after ransacking one apartment and decapitating a cat.
Howell was sentenced to more than 27 years for the crime. He was paroled in 2011 after serving 12 years.
Today, he sits in a Jackson County, Mo., jail awaiting court appearances. Last week, he was charged with killing three people and beating two others in south Kansas City.
Howell faces more than a dozen charges, including the accusation that he used a shotgun to kill Alice Hurst, 88; her son, Darrel Hurst, 63; and Susan Choucroun, 69. He is also accused of beating George and Anna Taylor. They may not survive.
