Fall sports practices officially got underway at GEHS Aug. 18 as several teams prepare for their season openers.
On the volleyball courts, Coach Erica Book is preparing a young, but very talented team for the Aug. 30 Metro Slam tournament at St. James Academy.
“We are in the process of rebuilding our team and will be extremely young this season,” said Book. “Summer workouts really helped this team get ready for the pace of EKL competition.”
Book will seek leadership from returning juniors Allie Weber and Rachel Knorr and sophomore Jesse Heniss.
Weber is the team’s only returning starter. Freshman Maddy Lindon has shown promise in preseason practices and will contribute.
“Maddy will be a player we can depend on to set and hit for us. She spent a lot of time over the summer learning the offense,” added Book.
In soccer, Coach Andy Weber will look for leadership from senior Dakota Steuber. Steuber returns after a junior season in which he tied a school record for most goals in a season.
Anchoring the defense will be seniors Ashton Vega and Jordan Peralez.
Assisting Weber will be former GEHS student athlete Taylor Brewer.
In golf, Coach Amy Van Rheen returns and is busy preparing her squad for a Sept. 9 competition in the first round of the EKL tournament at Leawood South Country Club.
“We had several players participate in summer tournaments and I’m excited about the season,” said Van Rheen.
Tennis coach Derrick Abromeit is preparing his team for a Sept. 2 home match.
Senior Krista Long returns after finishing tenth at state in 6A singles last season.
Other top returnee’s include Mary Murphy and juniors Emily Worth and Sammi Boring.
Contending for the other varsity spots will be senior Emily Terry and sophomores Kenna Gillespie and Rylie Mueller.
Cross country practice has began under the direction of veteran coach Larry Ward.
Seniors Raymond Carey, Tim Ward and Sierra Coen will lead the team in its first competition Sept. 6 in Wichita.
In the football arena, Coach Marvin Diener enters his ninth season at the helm and has a young, but very talented team.
First test comes Sept. 5 at home against highly ranked Shawnee Mission East.
