Edgerton resident Mike Phillips, in conjunction with the Edgerton Parks and Recreation Department, is presenting a series of free movies to residents this summer.
“Edgerton’s Saturday Night at the Movies,” is held one Saturday night a month throughout the summer in downtown Edgerton. The movie is shown on the outside west wall of the Edgerton Bank of Knowledge.
Phillips, an Edgerton resident of thirty years, started presenting the movies himself in 2011. He has joined forces this year with Edgerton Parks and Recreation Coordinator Tegan Meadors to present the movies to the public.
Phillips got the idea for the community movie nights from when he was a youth in California when his family would stay at campgrounds and the campground would offer movies for the guests. He decided he would like to offer that same opportunity to Edgerton residents.
The city of Edgerton provides the site and the licensing for the movies, Edgerton Frontier Days Association provides the PA sound system, and Phillips provides the video equipment. Edgerton Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups sell concessions at the movies for a nominal fee.
On May 30,”Frozen” was presented. Phillips said there was a great turnout for that event, and that attendance grows with each movie.
The movie in June, “Pirates of the Caribbean” was postponed due to inclement weather, but is rescheduled for mid-September. Phillips said there will be a special guest present that evening.
The movie for July 19 is “Remember the Titans,” and the movie for Aug. 9 is “The Lego Movie.”
The movies begin at approximately 9 p.m., and pre-movie activities start between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Phillips said the movie nights are for the entire family. He has been pleased with the attendance, and believes the movies help to bring the community closer together.
“It’s great to see the big crowds and how people stay afterwards and help clean up and put things away.”
Phillips said he hopes people will continue to support and enjoy the community movie nights.
