Rev. Harold “Lee” Hickman, 60, passed away May 2, 2014 in Olathe, Kansas.
Harold “Lee” was born in the Paola nursing home on May 17, 1953, to parents Wylodine and Don Hickman. He attended Shawnee Mission North and Northwest but graduated from Gardner High School, class of 1971. He attended Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri and Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas.
He continued his high school basketball career at Southwestern and was a lifelong Kansas Jayhawks fan.
Although he worked at Time Warner Cable and was General Manager of Prime Star Satellite, it was evident from early childhood his calling was to be a minister of the Gospel, preaching from an old pulpit found on his aunt’s farm while his sisters and their dolls served as his congregation. He was ordained in 1980. Out of great love for his personal Savior, he shared the Gospel of Christ by serving as youth pastor at Lenexa Assembly of God, pastor of Sterling Assembly of God, Sterling, Kansas and founding pastor of Eastside Assembly of God, Olathe, Kansas. Most recently he served as the beloved pastor of Southwest Community Church of Olathe.
He met the love of his life, Lynn, on Jan.19, 1996, on a blind date during the worst storm of that winter. After a brief courtship, he proposed on her birthday. They were married seven weeks later on his birthday in 1996, laughing that they were on their honeymoon on the four month anniversary of the day they met.
Harold “Lee” was the hub of their blended family, children: Amber, Ben (wife Sharen Leigh), Emily (husband Chris Thomas) and twin daughters Harmony and Hailey. His love for his grandchildren Andrew, Kayla, Luci, Skyler, Tyler, Ryder, and Porter was expressed through his big, burly hugs, silly jokes, spiritual guidance and gentle openness.
For the early years of their marriage Harold “Lee” and Lynn lived in Liberty, Missouri where he pastored New Covenant Community Church and she practiced medicine at Northland Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2006 they moved to Gardner Lake.
Together they were avid travelers and especially loved cruises. Recently they developed a love of “RVing”. He enjoyed cookouts, golf, his weekly ministerial lunches, fishing, swimming off the dock and laughing.
Harold “Lee” had beautiful blue eyes and a generous smile that lit every room. His broad laugh, which occasionally carried him away with a snort, always kicked off a new round of laughter. No matter where he was, he never met a stranger. Because he was so easy to love, it seemed he knew everyone and they all knew him.
He was preceded in death by his mother Wylodine. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Lynn, his father, Don (Jeanne); siblings Carolyn Pyle (Dwain), Janet Bowyer (Tim), and Don Hickman (Shirley) and a very large, loving extended family.
