After a tough 55-53 opening round loss to Gardner Edgerton High School, the Spring Hill Broncos rallied with wins versus Osawatomie and Sumner Academy to finish fifth in its annual invitational basketball tournament last week.
In the opener, SHHS pushed GEHS to the brink before bowing 55-53. The Broncos had an 13-11 first quarter lead and went up 29-27 by halftime. However, GEHS came back with a 28-24 second-half run to seal the verdict.
Against GEHS, Spring Hill got 13 points from Drew Cygan and 10 points from Ivan Hughes. Chris Bybee added nine points.
The loss landed SHHS into a second round matchup with Osawatomie.
Spring Hill jumped to a 19-7 first-quarter lead and went up 29-21 by halftime. Spring Hill added 39 second-half points and held on for a 68-61 win.
Bybee led the way with 17 points and Cygan chipped in 16 points. Danny Hodge had 15.
With the victory, SHHS earned a fifth-place game versus Sumner Academy.
The Broncos scored 48 second half points to capture a 77-65 win.
Bybee had a big night netting 26 points, while Hodge added 17 points. Cygan had 14 points.
Bybee was selected to the all-tournament team.
