James Kenneth Kearney, 84, of Gardner, passed away at his home on Jan. 9, 2014.
James was born Dec. 9, 1929 in Kansas City, Mo. to Harold and Katherine (Muehlebach) Kearney. He graduated from Rural Hartman High School in 1947 and then attended K-State for two years to study horticulture.
James married Nancy Brown on April 4, 1950 and of this union six children were born. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage together.
James was employed at the Rock Island Rail Road for 15 years and was a realtor for Cochran Real Estate. He owned and operated Kearney Greenhouse with his wife in Shawnee, Kan. for five years until they moved to Gardner in 1961where they relocated their business. He was a truck farmer and sold produce and plants at the Kansas City Farmer’s Market for 30 years.
James loved growing produce and plants. He also enjoyed Polka dancing with his wife and friends in Shawnee. He will be missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Randy Kearney.
James is survived by his wife Nancy, of the home; children Robert Kearney (Barbara), Kathy Hadley, Sue Enright (Steve), Chris Kearney (Cindy), Ken Kearney (Diana); brother Robert D. Kearney, Saratoga Springs, NY; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren of whom he was very proud.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Jan. 13, 2014 at Bruce Funeral Home, 712 S. Webster, Spring Hill, KS (913)592-2244. Burial follows at Edgerton Cemetery, Edgerton, KS. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Jan. 12, 2014 also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to National Children’s Cancer Society. Condolences may be left at
