The Johnson County Nutrition Program, in cooperation with the City of Edgerton, will be providing meals to citizens 60 years of age and over living in Edgerton, beginning Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.
A married couple can also order meals as long as at least one of the spouses is 60 years of age or over.
Choosing Healthy Options In a Community Environment, or CHOICE,  program is to provide meals and encourage seniors 60-plus, to eat healthy foods.
Eligible seniors may enroll for the program by calling (913) 715-8886, or may call Edgerton City Hall at (913)893-6231 for more information.
After being enrolled and receiving their assigned CHOICE card, seniors are to call the Gardner Senior Center at (913) 856-1762 to order meals before 11 a.m. the day before they wish to receive a meal. Weekly meals can also be ordered at one time to avoid calling daily.
Seniors requesting meals should arrive at Edgerton City Hall between 11 a.m. and noon  with their CHOICE card on the day they are to receive their meals. City staff will confirm the reservation and give the resident their meal. Seniors will then sign a reservation sheet upon receiving their meal.
The meal may also be received by a relative or friend as long as they present the senior’s CHOICE card to an Edgerton City Hall employee and sign the reservation sheet with their name, and the senior’s name.
The meals are provided free of charge by the Johnson County Nutrition Program, however there is a $3.00 suggested donation. No one is denied service due to the inability to pay a donation.
The next month’s menu and a donation letter will be sent to the senior’s home at the end of each month. Participants can donate by mail, on-line, or by calling the 913-715-8886 phone number for a credit card donation.
A representative of the Johnson County Nutrition Program commented, “we’re hoping for this to be a very successful program for the senior citizens of Edgerton.”
Johnson County already provides a “Meals on Wheels” program in Edgerton which brings meals to the homes of disabled or home bound residents.
