Helen Irene Hartegan, 97, of Gardner, passed away Dec. 2, 2013 at Olathe Medical Center.
Helen was born Jan. 25, 1916 in Oglesby, Okla. to Oliver O and Edna (Pugh) Topping. She graduated from Ramona High School where she was an outstanding guard on their basketball team that went to State. She moved to Kansas City, Kan. in 1934.
Helen married Richard Elwood Hartegan on Aug. 1, 1937 in Rosedale, Kan. She decorated cakes at the Rushton Bakery in Kansas City, Kan. They moved to Shawnee in 1951, where she worked at Bartlett Drapery. They later moved to Gardner in 1970.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, now Divine Mercy, the Bakers’ Union #218 in Kansas City, Mo., and the Altar Society. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary #2993 in Olathe.
Helen was a gifted seamstress and an avid card player. A great cook, Helen was very active in preparing funeral dinners. She was a very special lady and friend. Helen will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, grandson Scott Richard Burdolski, and sister, Alma Gray.
Helen is survived by her daughter Karen “Katy” Burdolski and Joseph, of Gardner; grandson Mark Burdolski, of Gardner; and brother Harold O. Topping, of Victoria, Texas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Dec. 5, 2013 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W Main, Gardner, KS. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa, Kan. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Divine Mercy’s Building Fund.
