Rallying for 12 fourth quarter points, the Pioneer Ridge seventh grade varsity football team defeated cross town rival Wheatridge 18-12 Oct. 15 at Pioneer.
Pioneer jumped to a 6-0 first quarter lead thanks to a five yard touchdown run by Baylor Maxwell.
Back came WMS with a 72 yard touchdown run just before halftime to tie the game 6-6.
WMS took a 12-6 lead in the third quarter on an eight yard touchdown run.
Trailing 12-6, Pioneer went to work. With just four minutes left in the game, cornerback Corbin Moore intercepted a Mustang pass and returned it to the 30 yard line.
Faced with a fourth and 12, Brody Marshall pitched to Maxwell for the crucial first down. Two plays later Maxwell tied the game at 12-12 on a sweep to the right side.
From there, the Pioneer defense took control. The Jags held WMS on a fourth down and set up their offense.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, Marshall tossed the game winning 23 yard pass to Tyler Rollwager to give Pioneer the victory.
Following the contest, Pioneer coach Jeff Davidson praised the effort of his players.
“The kids really stepped up the intensity in the second half and got the win” he added. I was real proud of the effort.
Davidson extended a special thanks to the parents and fans for their support.
