The fire station at 234 E. Park Street in Gardner is set to expand.
Gardner Planning Commissioners approved plans to add 1,116-sqaure feet to the space during a meeting on June 25.
A building plan must be approved before construction begins on the project.
The fire station was built in 1976. The new addition will add six sleeping rooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and a workout room to the 2,413-square foot building. According to the design plans, the original building will also be reconfigured to accommodate a Med Act room, a day room, kitchen and office.
In other business, planning commissioners heard a presentation from Community Development Director Mike Hall about potential areas for future development and annexation.
Hall also told members of the commission that the community development department will interview three potential contractors for drafting a comprehensive plan update in the near future. The city received five requests for information from potential bidders for the update plan contract. From that, staff narrowed the field to three. Hall said a contractor for the project could be named and approved as early as August.
Only four members of the seven-member board, a quorum, attended the June 25 meeting. New members will likely be added between now and the next meeting. One seat is vacant after Tory Roberts was appointed to the city council, and a second seat will soon be vacated when commissioner Andy Copeland moves out of town. Meanwhile, the terms of other commissioners are set to expire.
The next planning commission meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 23. Amy Kynard, city planner, said that meeting may be canceled as there are no items set for next month’s agenda. At the August meeting, planners will again discuss the fate of a used car lot on the south side of town.
Hall said he anticipates new planning commissioners may be seated by the August meeting.
