Thank you to members of the VFW and American Legions in Gardner and Spring Hill and their auxiliaries for their efforts in decorating the graves of fallen soldiers and honoring them on Memorial Day.
With the assistance of clergy, the groups annually organize ceremonies at the local cemeteries and at the veteran’s memorial. This year, they offered prayers and thanks to those who sacrificed for our country during a torrential downpour. The ceremonies were brief – a prayer, a 21-gun salute, and taps.
It is fitting that we remember fallen soldiers annually for their ultimate sacrifice.
A few dozen people attended the ceremony this year – standing quietly beneath umbrellas. We wish more people made the effort to attend the dignified Memorial Day ceremonies. The holiday was established so that Americans would never forget the sacrifices made by the men and women who fought and died to protect this country and the freedoms we enjoy.
As veterans of wars say, “All sacrificed some; Some sacrificed all.”
It’s a sentiment we should remember every day, not solely on Memorial Day. We thank local groups for their continued efforts in ensuring that we never forget.
