In honor of Heart Awareness Month in February, Nike Elementary and Sunflower Elementary celebrated their healthy hearts with the annual Jump Rope for Heart event.  Students spent the month practicing their jumping skills and learning about how to keep their hearts healthy in PE class with Mrs. VanRheen and Mr. Williams.  Along with this activity, students collected donations for the American Heart Association.
This year Nike raised a total of $1,700 falling just short of their $2000 goal.   Nike has raised a grand total of $13,195.11 over the past 6 years.  Their Top collector was Second Grader Reese Kehl, receiving $200.00 in donations for the American Heart Association.  Jeremy Williams, Physical Education Teacher, said “this event is just another lesson of character and gives thekids an opportunity to help others they may never meet in life.”
This year Sunflower challenged their students to raise $4,000.   They went above and beyond that by more than doubling their projected goal with $8.293.Sunflower principal, Mr. Mortenson, told the students that he would allow the top class to duct tape him to a wall if they reached their school goal.  He paid up on that bet by being taped up at an all school celebration assembly.  Top collectors for Sunflower were third grader Sadie Helms collecting $550.00 and first grader Hannah Phipps collecting $2,700.  Amy VanRheen, Physical Education Teacher, said “the Sunflower students went crazy this year and it was unbelievable how much money they raised.  This is a great event for both schools and we appreciate the support from our families and schools as we teach our students how to give back to the community.”
Over the past six years the two schools have raised over$29,561.11 in donations for the American Heart Association to help fight Heart Disease.
