Edgerton Planning Commissioners tabled a public hearing for a conditional-use permit that would allow a lighted billboard sign on the southwest corner of 199th Street and Homestead Lane at 20080 Homestead Lane.
The billboard would be visible from Interstate 35. The applicant for the conditional use permit is Tim Gates, of Agnes Gates Realty, on behalf of Jeffrey and Jennifer Thorp.
Gates was present at the Feb. 12 Planning Commission meeting to answer any questions the commissioners or the public may have had. In addition, there were several homeowners with property located near the proposed billboard site at the meeting as well. Many of the homeowners voiced concerns about the project, claiming the lighted billboard would be too close to their homes and would not be in Edgerton’s best interest.
One group of concerned citizens has started a petition drive to express their disapproval of the billboard project.
At the end of the public hearing concerning this matter, the Planning Commission voted 9-0 to table the billboard issue until the March 12 meeting, so more information could be acquired.
In other business, the commission approved a final site development plan for the DeLong Company, Inc., a family-operated grain exporting and trans-loading business, based in Clinton, Wisc. The company requested approval to construct a facility at 32612 W.191st St., Edgerton, adjacent to the BNSF Intermodal site. The DeLong Company will be the first tenant to be located at the new Logistics Park Kansas City.
DeLong’s business operation consists of removing grain from trucks and loading it into railroad cars, where it would then be transported via the Kansas City Intermodal Facility through the port of Long Beach, CA, and eventually arriving in Far East Asia.
At the Planning Commission meeting, Patrick DeLong, multi-generational member of the company, spoke on behalf of the DeLong Company. He expressed the company’s enthusiasm and anticipation of having a facility in Kansas, as they currently have fifteen locations throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. The Planning Commission approved the site plan proposal for the DeLong facility by a unanimous 9-0 vote. Edgerton City Administrator Beth Linn said through a press release, that the city of Edgerton is pleased to welcome the DeLong Company to Edgerton and to the KC Logistics Park.
DeLong would like to begin construction in March 2013 with an anticipated completion date of late summer 2013, in time for the fall harvest season.
The BNSF Intermodal Project is set for an October 2013 opening date.
