Ernest N. “Bud” Sweetwood, 89, of Edgerton, Kan. passed away Sept. 26, 2012 at his home. 
Ernest was born March 24, 1923 in Williamsburg, Kan.S to Francis Jacob and Susie Ethel (Thornbrugh) Sweetwood. He grew up in Williamsburg, moving to Gardner in 1941.
He served in the Army during W.W. II with the Timberwolf 104th Infantry Division. Bud was wounded Dec. 2, 1943 along the Rhine River. He received two Purple Hearts and a Presidential Unit Citation for his sacrifice.
He married Melva Rose Sands on Oct. 25, 1946 in Olathe. They raised their family in Gardner where Bud was a self-employed carpenter working with Irvin Kneedler, Dick Gieringer, Ben Nitcher and Homer Rankin.
In 1973 they moved to rural Edgerton where he continued to work many years until he retired. 
He attended the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner and was a 60-year member of the Gardner American Legion Post 19.  Bud enjoyed hunting and fishing. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Cheryl and siblings: Irvin Sweetwood, Mabel Drum, Maudie Hutton and Carrie Bush.
Bud is survived by his wife, Melva, of the home; daughter, Barbara Sue Sweetwood of Wellsville, Kan.; three grandchildren; four great-granddaughters and sister, Maxine Griffin of Ottawa, Kan.
Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m., Sept. 29, 2012 at Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, KS.  Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 29, 2012 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, Kan.
