Using a strong running game, the Wheatridge Middle school seventh grade varsity football team blanked Baldwin 14-0 in the season opener Aug. 30 in Baldwin.
Fullback Colton Kane got Wheatridge on the board with a strong second quarter touchdown run.  Up 6-0, WMS added a 40-yard, third quarter touchdown run by Emilio Orepeza.
“ Our backs ran well, and we played as a team,” said Coach Jason Radel. Our offensive line did a great job.”
Meanwhile, the defense was spearheaded by Dawson Crist, Mat Graham, Skylar Rogers, Conner Greig, and Mason Lumley. They held the Bulldogs  scoreless.
Now 1-0, WMS returns home Sept. 4 to play Louisburg.
Things proved  a bit more difficult in eighth grade varsity action as the Mustangs lost a hard fought 6-0 decision at home to Baldwin.
After a scoreless first half, Baldwin sealed the game with a 60-yard  fourth quarter touchdown pass.
Despite the loss, top offensive performances came from Dylan Watts, Jazz Davis and Griffin Johns.
WMS hoped to get back on the winning track in action at Loiusburg  Sept. 4. Results were not available at press time.
