The Lady Blazers volleyball squad served notice to state 6A teams by defeating defending champion Washburn Rural on its home court Aug. 30.
Gardner Edgerton High School survived a tough first match turning back the defending state champs, 19-25, 25-21, and 25-21. The match featured great passing, top defensive play and aggressive attacking.
Senior Cassie Wait and junior Jill Starling led the way recording 15 kills apiece. Seniors Danie Plank had six kills, Hannah Bettge, 4 kills.  Bettge had 29 assists and 23 ace serves. Mackenzie Skeens had a 2.62 serve receive ratio.
Things proved a b it more difficult in the second match as the Lady Blazers lost to Bishop Miege,  the defending 5A champs, 23-25 and 16-25.
The Lady Blazers schedule remains  busy with matches against Olathe South (Sept. 4), and Blue Valley West  ( Sept. 11).
