Gardner Edgerton High School ACT Composite score of 23.2 once again outperformed the state (21.9) and national averages (21.1) in 2012. Gardner Edgerton High School students outpaced the state averages in all areas tested with higher average scores in English (23.3), Mathematics (22.4), Reading (23.4), and Science (23.0) The GEHS average composite ACT score for 2011 was 23.1.
The 2012 ACT results reflect the performance of 167 GEHS seniors, up from 145 last year. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test designed to measure college readiness and preparation. The ACT includes four separate exams in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science. Scoring on the exam is based on a scale of 1 to 36 with a student’s composite score being the average of the four test scores.
“Our administration, staff, students, and educational services department have worked diligently to improve the overall ACT composite scores over the past few years by implementing new and advanced placement courses and special programs,” said Bill Gilhaus, USD 231 superintendent of schools. “It’s evident the advanced educational opportunities and commitment to excellence from our staff and students contributed to the district’s continued academic success.”
Students are encouraged to enroll in advanced placement courses which provide additional rigor and better prepare them for ACT testing and college course work. In addition, the College Now program, in partnership with Johnson County Community College, allows students to earn college credit while in high school. Students may take designated courses, taught by qualified GEHS teachers, and earn “dual credit” (both high school and college credit) simultaneously, without leaving Gardner Edgerton High School campus.
GEHS Students can also earn college experience and credit through the Quik Step program. The Quik Step program, also a partnership with Johnson County Community College, allows students to earn college credit while in high school, however students must attend Johnson County Community College rather than GEHS to fulfill the course requirements.
“The ACT results are valuable because they provide an additional indicator for our district to assess our curriculum with respect to college and career readiness for students,” said Gilhaus. “Making sure our students are well prepared in all areas to enter college or the workforce is a top priority at Gardner Edgerton High School.”
