Renovation work is about to get underway on Johnson County’s new Justice Annex.
Commissioners approved a $5.6 million contract with The Weitz Company of Lenexa to complete the work that is expected to ease crowding at the current downtown courthouse..
Commissioners had previously purchased the former Dillions building, 588 E. Santa Fe St., for the project.
The purchase price was $2 million.
The project is part of an “interim” plan to create more work and parking space for court employees.
The $12.167 million project also includes renovation work at the existing courthouse.
“The interim plan will improve operations for several key components in the criminal justice system which is growing under pressure, now and in the future, due to increasing case loads,” Joe Waters, director of facilities, said in a news release.
Work on the Justice Annex is expected to start in August and be completed in early 2013.
