The Gardner Blazers’ 13-under competitive baseball team recently brought back first place honors in the Olathe Youth Competitive division.
In the championship series versus the KC Magic, the Blazers dropped the opener 6-5, but rallied to win the decisive tie breaker in game two, 10-7.
Austyn Hatton was the winning pitcher and Mat Sampson hit a two-run homerun.
Jared Highfill led a 10-hit attack with two hits and two RBI’s. Other key hits came from Tyler Conway, Brady Scott, Nolan Quiring, Tim Wood, Anthony Reed.
The nearly five-hour championship double header at Prairie Center Park featured controversial plays, timely hitting and solid defensive play.
When the dust settled, the Blazer had their first Olathe City Championship in three years.
In the title game, the Blazers jumped to a 9-2 lead and then held on thanks to top defensive play from outfielders Dylan Mars, Sampson, Wood, Reed, infielders Quiring, Jesse May and a gritty catching performance by Zach Rempel.
Roughed up in a second-inning home plate collision, Rempel returned to the hitting lineup and provided a boost.
In his absence, Conway turned in a top performance at catcher.
“The Kids worked hard in practice and improved,” said Manager Dave Highfill.“ The tornaments got us ready for the league championship series”
Highfill had help from assistants Steve Scott, Tim Wood Sr. and Greg Rempel.
The Blazers 16-7 record included appearances in Shawnee and Blue Valley tourneys.
