Howard Russell Walker, 86, of Olathe, Kan., formerly of Gardner, passed away June 2, 2012 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo.
Howard was born Feb. 7, 1926 to Olin and Clara Walker in Formoso, Kan. Later the family moved to Beloit, Kan. and in1936 moved to WaKeeney, Kan. Howard attended grade school and graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1944.
He served for two years in the U. S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He returned home and was employed by the American Telephone Co. in WaKeeney, Kan.
Howard married his high school sweetheart, Caroline Schneider on Oct. 6, 1946. They made their home in WaKeeney and they had two daughters, Olene and JoElla. The family moved to Garden City, Kan. where Howard was employed by Mobil Oil Co.
In 1959 he joined the Kansas Highway Patrol. He was stationed in Salina, Kan., Colby, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. For the last seven years he was a Field Sgt. for Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson and Miami Counties, all in Kansas. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the American Legion of Gardner and the Kansas Peace Officers Assoc. Howard was a former member of St. Mark’s and then Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline in 2011, his parents, and sister Joyce Marie Dunn.
Howard is survived by daughters Olene Louise Lux and Steven of Stilwell, Kan. and JoElla Vescovo and Robert of Chesterfield, Mo.; sister JoAnn Ruth Jones of Federal Way, Wash.; four grandchildren, John, Brian, Michelle and Sarah and four great grandchildren
Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m., June 23, 2012 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 920 S Alta Lane, Olathe, KS. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Gardner Cemetery.
