The Gardner Edgerton High School Blazers spring sports season officially begins March 23 with boys baseball in action at the Shawnee Mission East Classic.
First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. as the Blazers begin a new era under first year head coach Corey Schrack.
“The kids have been working hard in pre-season practices,” said Schrack. “Pitching, defense, and timely hitting will be keys for a successful season. We return a solid nucleus of seniors, many with varsity experience. Some sophomores will be expected to contribute.”
The varsity roster as of March 15 included Alex Winkler, Ryan Goetzmann, Clayton Dye, Alton Quiring, Zach Pruitt, Eric Moore, Collin Jasper, Dallas Cody, Chase Lee, Caleb Clarke, Jacob Means, Wally Nellor, Brett Wolford, and Noah Tenove.
The Lady Blazer softball squad, under the direction of Joanne Calvin, will take to the field in action versus Olathe South, March 26. On March 27 a doubleheader takes place versus rival St. Thomas Aquinas.
Providing leadership for the Lady Blazers will be seniors Ashleigh Perry and Shelby Plank. Perry has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Highland and Plan will take her talent to Barton County.
In the tennis arena, Coach Jon Collum has his squad ready for the March 26 Blazer Quadrangular. The Washburn Invitational is March 27.
The girls soccer squad opens the season versus Bishop Miege  4:30 p.m. on March 28 and the GEHS track squad heads to the Shawnee Mission South Relays, March 31.
Last year’s Coach Brian McGee’s boys track squad took second place in the East Kansas League and had a first place 5A regional finish. This year’s squad will be strong in hurdling with Tim Seymour, Marcus Williams and Matt Mayeske returning. Senior Ryan Weisenburger returns and has a 14’2″ pole vault clearance to his credit.
Finally, the GEHS golf squad, under the direction of Scott Schaefer, hits the links April 2 at their own Blazer Invitational.
