Jackie “Jack” Lamar Overcash, 86, of Gardner, Kan., passed away March 10, 2012 at Olathe Medical Center.
Jack was born in Miami, Fla. on Aug. 3, 1925 to Walter Dewey and Lucille (Huff) Overcash. His family moved to Lakeland, Fla. where he grew up.
He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1942, serving in the Air Transport Service. He spent time in the Olathe Naval Station before leaving for the South Pacific, where he served the rest of his tour. He was discharged in 1946.
Jack married Nellie Belle Martin in 1944. They had two children. Nellie passed away in 1972.
Jack tried farming after his discharge and then went to work for the Gardner Tractor Company. He began his own business in 1957, called Jack’s Service. He retired in 1982.
In 1973, Jack married Betty Lou Wolf. They moved to Florida in 1982, spending 22 years living in Florida and Georgia. They returned in 2004, settling in Gardner.
Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner, the Gardner American Legion and the VFW. He was an artist, enjoying woodcarving. Jack also liked to travel and fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harry Overcash, W.D. Overcash, Jr., sister Dorothy Gaiser and first wife Nellie.
Jack is survived by his wife Betty, of the home; daughter Paula Kay and husband Lynn Peters, of Overland Park, Kan.; son Jack L. Overcash Jr. and wife Jill of Ocklawaha, Fla.; brother Bobby G. Overcash, of Lakeland, Fla.; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Memorial Services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner, 138 E Shawnee. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Gardner Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., March 15, 2012, at the church before the service. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
