A tough first period doomed Gardner Edgerton in a 6A substate first round loss to Olathe South in a game played at South on March 2.
South opened the game with a 26-7 salvo that gave them a comfortable first period lead. For the rest of the contest, the Blazers stayed right with the eventual substate champs, only being outscored by two. It was not nearly enough as GE fell 61-40 against a very fine Falcon squad who has a legitimate shot at the state championship this week.
Ben Carpenter and Tanner led shared scoring honors with 10 points each. Kyle Huppe added six points, CJ Hall had five, Dilon Dodson had four, Matt Plank had three, and Zach Hickman added two.
The loss ended the Blazer season at 12-9 which included a third place finish in the rugged Eastern Kansas League. GE also was second in the Spring Hill tourney in their fine campaign.
While a strong senior class—Webb, Hall, Hickman, Chip Kueffer, and Caleb Clarke—will move on, a superb group of returning players will return for 2012-13.
