My Kansas! Club, a group of Spring Hill sixth through eighth graders who study history, gave a presentation to the Spring Hill Historical Society on March 5.
The club has researched the history of Spring Hill and the surrounding area and have written a paper documenting their findings.
Some of this year’s research topics included James B. Hovey, the founder of Spring Hill; W.R. Rutter, a founding father, local carpenter and undertaker; the Black Bob Indians; the Traveler’s Rest Hotel, which was the first building constructed in Spring Hill; and the stagecoach line that ran though Spring Hill.
The group has also made a presentation to the Rotary club and plans to present to the Rotary Club, a local retirement home, the Ladies Auxiliary, the senior luncheons and the city council
The club’s writings have been submitted to Kansas! Magazine for a competition. The club won Best of Show during its first year, and Best Seventh Grader Entry during its second year.
