Special to The Gardner News
It was a tough week for the Gardner Edgerton varsity girls’ squad as the Blazers lost a pair of league contests. Despite those losses, the Lady Blazers season record remains stellar at 13-5 as the season heads to its completion.
GE started the week off by facing league leader Blue Valley-the league front runner. In a game that had regional final intensity, the Lady Tigers triumphed 26-24 in overtime.
The Lady Blazers led this one early-6-4 after one period, and 14-11 at the half. BV stayed close in the third but GE still maintained a slim 18-15 lead. The Lady Tigers tied the game in the fourth, forcing the extra frame.
That overtime featured just five possessions for both teams combined with Blue Valley hitting two free throws with less than five seconds remaining to post the win.
Molly Porter led the Blazers with nine points. Cassie Wait added six, Kari Devlin added four, Shelbe Vandeberghe had three and Danni Plank rounded out the scoring effort with two tallies.
Three nights later, GE was back on the court, facing league-rival Saint Thomas Aquinas on the Saints’ home floor.
The Lady Blazers trailed 15-11 after one period before tying the game at 20 at the half. Aquinas sprinted to a 31-26 lead entering the final frame. GE battled back but could not get over the hump in falling 42-39.
Vandeberghe led the team in scoring with 17 points. Plank added ten, Porter had four, Devlin had four, Kyla Martin had three and Kiley Reindl-Boden had one tally to round out the scoring effort.
Next up for the Lady Blazers will be their final regular season game when they host Bishop Miege on Feb. 24. Game time is 6 p.m.
