The Gardner Edgerton School District has published an incorrect voter registration deadline pertaining to the Jan. 31 bond issue mail ballot.
Flyers and mailers from the school district identify the registration deadline as Dec. 30.
According to the Johnson County Election office, voter registration closes 21 days prior to an election.
Therefore, the actual voter registration deadline is Jan. 10.
Leann Northway, USD 231 director of community relations, said the earlier deadline was recommended by the election office.
“Registering to vote by Dec. 30 will allow voters to automatically receive their ballot in the mail and not have to go through the process to ‘apply in writing’ for a ballot after the Jan. 1st deadline,” she said. “This was a recommendation from the Johnson County Election Office.”
Ballots are mailed 20 days before Election Day. Voters who were registered 30 days prior to the election will receive a ballot in the mail. Those who register fewer than 30 days prior to the election must apply for a mail ballot using a replacement ballot form.
Ballots must be returned before noon on Jan. 31.
