Chloetta Marie (Wiggin) Cordell, 90, of Gardner, Kan., passed away Nov. 3, 2011 at Medicalodge of Gardner.
Chloetta, the daughter of Bill and Myrtle (Cavanaugh) Wiggin, was born Feb. 24, 1921 in Lawrence, Kan. In 1922, her parents moved to Johnson County, Kan. and in 1925 they moved to the Elmhurst Addition of Overland Park, Kan.
Chloetta started school at Overland Park at the age of five. She attended Shawnee Mission Rural High School, riding the Strang Line, and graduated in 1938 at the age of 17.
After working for three years, she married Howard Cordell on Sept. 12, 1941 in Olathe, Kan. To this union was born Larry Lee in 1942 and James Howard in 1944. She was active with their baseball teams.
Chloetta worked for six years at Cramer Chemical Company and then for Bryant Enterprise of Gardner and McGrew Color Graphics in Kansas City, Mo. She retired to their home in the country in 1972 where she raised a garden, had flowers and enjoyed her grandchildren. She canned and froze vegetables and made various jellies.
Chloetta was a member of the Gardner Chapter of Eastern Star since 1954 and served as Worthy Matron in 1959.
She enjoyed doing genealogy and traced her father’s family back to 1630, when they came to New Hampshire, her mother’s family back to 1855 when they came from Ireland to New York. She also traced Howard’s mother’s family back to 1630 when then came to Massachusetts from England and his father’s family back to 1860 when the lived in Illinois.
In 2003 they sold their farm home and moved to a retirement complex in town.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard in 2004, granddaughter Mendy Marie, brothers Oren and Edward Wiggin, and sisters Evelyn Marquardt and Pauline Atwood.
She leaves to mourn her passing sons Larry Cordell of Gardner and Jim Cordell of Greenwood, Mo.; grandchildren Chris, Shawn, Tiffany, Tammie and Jamie Lynn; great grandchildren Cody Lee, Tommy James, Chance Alan, Matthew Gene, Christopher Cole, Randi Marie, Avery Michael, Aubrey Nicole, Chloe Genevieve and Riley Wade; great great grandson Braxton; sister Georgia Granger; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111 with an Eastern Star Ceremony. Burial will be at Gardner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Nov. 7, 2011 also at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Order of Eastern Star, #236. Condolences may be left at
