Ricardo Garcia and Makaela Willis qualified for the state cross country meet by posting qualifying marks at a DeSoto 4A regional, Oct. 22 at Wyandotte County Park.
“Ricardo and Makaela really ran well and are quite deserving to represent us at State,” said coach Rick O’Neil. “Overall, I was real pleased with our effort. It was a good day for Spring Hill cross country.”
Garcia earned a seventh-place medal with a 5k time of 17:12. Freshman Michael Hanson was 29th in 18:20 and Andrew Hartsock (64th, 19:48) followed. Aaron Naylor finished 78th in 20:49 and freshman Alex Reynolds, 83rd in 21:26. Taylor Smith claimed 89th in 22:10 and Jake Putnam was 90th in 22:15.
For the girls, Willis, a junior, earned a ninth-place medal with an excellent 4k time of 16:03.
Next came Brooke Smith, 32nd in 17:01, and Taylor Hayden (34th, 17:09); Macy Burke (35th, 17:11); Michaela Gustafson (61st , 18:26); and Amanda Williams (74th , 19:25).
The state 4A meet is at Wamego, Oct. 29. Willis will start her 4k race at approximately 10 a.m. and Garcia gets going at approximately 11:30 a.m.
