Sophomore Aly Daniels’ first place finish highlighted gold-medal efforts by the Blazer cross country teams at the Blue Valley North Invitational, Sept. 10.
The Lady Blazers won their second title at North and it was the first time for the boys.
Daniels won the 4k contest in 17:46 just ahead of junior teammate McKenzie Scroggin (17:59). Sophomore Katie Groshong finished 10th in 19:04; senior Molly Porter was 15th in 19:20 and freshman Cheyanne Foster, 17th in 19:41.
“I was real pleased with both teams’ performances,” said coach Larry Ward. “We made a lot of improvement and posted some impressive times.”
Ward also liked the first place effort of his Blazer boys squad. Juniors Dewey Molenda and Arron Scott led the way with second and third places, respectively.
Molenda finished second in a 5k time of 17:29 and Scott was right behind with a third-place clocking of 17:34.
Sophomore Omar Quintana finished seventh in 17:57 and senior Keith Heniss, eighth in 18:10. Junior Chris Kreiser took 13th in 18:14. Junior Justin Wilde was 14th in 18:18.
All told, the boys posted the low score of 32 to finish ahead of runner up Shawnee Mission West’s 35.
“We got good scoring at the top and took the title,” added Ward.
In the JV boys race, freshman Tim Ward finished sixth in an impressive 5k time of 19:20 – just ahead of freshman teammate Tim Visos-Ely, eighth in 19:52. Sophomore Nathan Fox was ninth in 19:54.
In the JV girls race, sophomore Jade Visos-Ely finished eighth in a 4k time of 20:04.
Next comes the Turner Invitational, Sept. 14. The varsity girls race starts at 4 p.m.
