Howard Thomas, 85, of Gardner, passed away at his home Sept. 4, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Howard was born Jan. 5, 1926 in Dallas County, Mo. to Riley and Lydia (Marks) Thomas. He grew up in Long Lane, Mo., moved to Kansas City, Kan. in 1948 and then to Gardner in 1960. He married Birdeen B Bowman Dec. 29, 1950 in Kansas City, Kan.
Howard farmed and worked as a General Manager for Timberline, Inc. from 1948-1993. After retiring he returned to farming full time. Howard was a 50 year active member of First Baptist Church of Gardner serving as an usher and greeter until his health declined. He enjoyed being a lumberman, farming and spending time with family. Howard will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Birdeen in 1999, grandson Andrew Smith, and brother Raymond Thomas.
He is survived by his children Jeanne and husband Michael Smith, Edgerton, James and wife Carolyn Thomas, Gardner, and Joel and wife Jennifer Thomas, Edgerton; five grandchildren: Michael, Michelle, Katie, Kelly and Cole; siblings Loren Thomas, Tonganoxie, Kan. and Zelma Larimer, Buffalo, Mo..
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Sept. 9, at First Baptist Church of Gardner, 324 E Shawnee, Gardner, KS. Burial follows at Gardner Cemetery. Visitation also at the church 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sept. 8, Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Gardner. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111.
