designed by Gardner resident Rita Reed, has found its way to Hollywood.
Reed’s shirt makes an appearance in the new film “The Hangover II,” starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis as three buddies who wake up in Bangkok, Thailand, after a night of drunken debauchery.
The shirt, titled “Faithful Friend,” is one of many Reed created for her online business, Friskybizpet Designs, which specializes in apparel bearing the likenesses of household pets. It was actually Galifianakis himself, Reed said, who saw her yellow lab shirt on Cafepress.com and notified representatives with Warner Bros. of his desire to wear the shirt during filming.
“Zach found it on Café Press, and the studio bought several shirts,” Reed said. “Then they gave me a call and asked me if they could use it in the movie.”
Reed said she was pleasantly surprised that her shirt would find its way into a Hollywood movie – even one she hadn’t heard of.
“I was extremely shocked,” she said. “But I didn’t know what ‘The Hangover’ was.”
That changed when the movie opened on May 26, of course.
“Now I’ve seen it. It kind of goes against my moral values, but I was impressed with how the shirt came across in the movie,” Reed said. “The actors did a tremendous job with their parts.”
Shortly after the movie premiered, word of mouth spread about Reed’s famous creation.
Now, her website proudly touts the shirt worn by Galifianakis in “The Hangover II.” More than 1,000 Facebook users are fans of her business as well.
“I’ve definitely started seeing higher sales,” Reed said. “I also have contracts with two merchandisers who have been marketing the shirt for me.”
For now, Friskybizpet Designs is simply a way to supplement the income Reed makes from her full-time job as a CAT Scan technician at Olathe Medical Center. But Reed said she’s hopeful that her yellow lab shirt will continue to generate sales on her website. In the meantime, however, she’s fine with sitting back and knowing her work has made it to the silver screen.
“I’m really enjoying being in the limelight,” she laughed.
