Postal letter carriers in Gardner will collect donated food as part of their regular mail routes on Saturday, May 14 as part of the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes increased from 49.1 million in 2008, to 50.2 million in 2009. Here at home, about one in eight people do not know where their next meal will come from.
May 14, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The Spring Hill Lion’s Club will host a pancake breakfast on May 14. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. at Spring Hill Intermediate School and runs through 10 a.m.
SH Daffodil Days
and Business Expo
May 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the city of Spring Hill and the Spring Hill Rec Commission will host family activities and a business expo at Spring Hill Intermediate School. The event will feature a variety of things to do and see including the world’s largest windsock courtesy of the Kansas City Kite Club. Businesses will be on hand to show their wares at the expo, student groups and organizations will provide entertainment, and there will be many additional family-friendly activities. The fun starts at 10 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m.

May 14, 3 p.m.
A poker tournament May 14 will help raise funds for national javelin competitors from Gardner Edgerton High School. Dani Plank and Ashlee Bilhimer have qualified to compete in the United States World Youth Championship Trials.
The poker tournament will help fund the pair’s travel, registration and lodging.
The first hand will be dealt at 3 p.m. on May 14 at Wally’s Bar and Grill. The $40 buy-in includes tournament play, a buffet and two free drink tickets.
Texas Hold ‘Em
Benefit for Relay for Life
May 14, 6 p.m.
A Relay for Life Team will host a poker tournament to help support a “world with more birthdays.” The event will raise funds for a local Relay for Life team, which supports cancer research.
Registration starts at 6 p.m., and the first hand will be dealt at 7 p.m. on May 14 at the American Legion Post No. 19 in Gardner. Early reservations will receive $4,000 poker stacks for $30. Cost at the door is $40.
