Using balanced scoring, the Lady ‘Blazers track squads brought back a second-place finish and the boys took fourth at the Olathe Invitational, April 8.
On the girls’ side, GEHS totaled 161 points and finished runner-up to host Olathe East (181½). Olathe South took third and Shawnee Mission South, fourth.
Leading the way was Dani Plank who took gold with a new school record and state 5A best javelin throw of 147’8″.Ashlee Bilhimer took second with a personal best 132’2″ and Jessica Cisneros, third with a personal best, 124’10″.
Equally impressive was Cassie Wait who took gold with an 11’0″ pole vault. McKenzi Smith cleared 9’6″ for fourth place and Natalie Mitchell cleared 9’0″ for fifth place.
Jalisa Brice had a big day. She won the triple jump with a leap of 36’1″, took second in the long jump (16’½”), third in the 200 (26.9) and teamed with Taylor Claybon, Brittney Parks, and Kyla Martin to win the 400 relay in a time of 50.02.
Parks added gold in the 400 meters with a time of 61.02.
A second-place finish went to McKenzie Scroggin in the 1600 meters in a time of 5:36. Bronze medals were awarded to Martin (100 meters in 12.75), Hannah Schneider (shot put, 38’1″), and Chanel Davis (300 hurdles, 48.56).
On the boys’ side, GEHS scored the most points by a ‘Blazer boys team at ODAC and finished in a fourth-place tie with Blue Valley North. Olathe East won the title by a 134-95 margin versus runner-up Olathe North (95). Shawnee Mission South took third with 93 points.
“The boys continue to show steady improvement and set 20 personal records,”said Coach Brian McGee.
Casey Bowen led a 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault with 15’9″, while Tommy Brady took second clearing 13’0″. Ryan Weisenburger took third with a 12’6″ effort.
Alex Knorr tossed the discus 141′ ½” for second place and Austin Gruber’s 400 meter time of 53.69 was good enough for second place.
Sophomore Dewey Molenda raced to third place at 800 meters in a personal best time of 2:02.93. This was the second-fastest 800 recorded by a sophomore in school history.
Tim Seymour clocked 41.46 in the 300 hurdles and placed second. The time ranks number two in 5A.
The 400 quartet of Michael Jolly, Bowen, Deion Shump, and Marcon Waters took fourth with a time of 44.28.
It was the fastest 400 relay time at GEHS in six years.
Both teams return to ODAC April 15 for the Raven Relays, sponsored by Olathe Northwest.
