She graduated from Albert City-Truesdale High School in 1987, earned her BS in Speech and Hearing Science from Univ. of Iowa in 1991 and her MA as a Speech-Language Pathologist from Kansas State in 1994. She married Edward Martin Shafer in rural, Newell, IA on May 30, 1992. Ed and Michelle were blessed with two daughters, Cassandra Jean (CJ) and Francis (Frankie) Mayta. After graduation the family moved to Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX where Edward was commissioned as a Second Lieut. in the US Army. During that time Michelle commuted to Carlsbad, NM to complete her internship and earn her Certificate of Clinical Competence as an SLP-CCC, at which time she obtained a position as a Speech-Language Pathologist with state and national certification, in the El Paso Independent School district. They moved to Gardner in 2006 where she worked for the Gardner Edgerton Unified School District.
Michelle enjoyed her career very much as she worked with children and adults with special needs (typically, speech &/or language concerns). She enjoyed reading, sports, especially college football, and had attended several Bowl games over the years. Michelle enjoyed watching her daughters’ sports activities. She felt truly blessed with the family provided her by blood and marriage. Michelle will be dearly missed by family and friends.
