Is the Gardner Multi-Service Center  closing?
According to Joanne Haworth, Community Social Services Manager at the Gardner Multi-Service Center, while the not-for-profit has recently undergone some changes in the services they are able to offer, the center is open for business.
“We’re trying to prioritize service needs – including utility and rent assistance, the food pantry, information referrals and case management – where people can call and find more help with resources and budget planning, we’ll sit down with them and provide help with that,” she said.
In addition to the afore mentioned services the center will continue to provide the school supply drive, birthday closet, weekly bread donations and free hygiene products.
Haworth explained that, due to a changing economy the center experienced had a decrease in their funding which resulted in cuts to some of their established programs including the Clothing Closet, Thanksgiving meals and the Christmas for Children program.
While the Clothing Closet may move to a new location, yet to be announced, the Christmas for Children program found a new home at the City of Gardner.
“There was nobody to take over the Thanksgiving program,” Haworth said.  “That is something, with our limited staff, that we are just not able to provide and we had to let it go.”
