As game time draws near, Gardner Edgerton High School staff continue to prepare for the upcoming match-up between the Trailblazers and St. Thomas Aquinas this Friday, Oct. 22 at District Stadium.
While capacity for the stadium has been expanded for the game, the crowd is expected to spill over into standing room only.
“We’ve increased seating to 5,400, up from the original capacity of 3,000,” said Kent Glaser, Activities Director and high school vice principal. “We brought in bleachers in stages throughout the season. For this game we’re bringing in four additional bleachers.”
The district is also ready for a rush on the ticket line; this week GEHS will be offering fans a chance to skip ticketing and go to the entrance.
“Now through Friday we are pre-selling tickets to the game from 8 (a.m.) to 4 (p.m.) in the high school office,” Glaser explained. “Fans can come up to the school and purchase their tickets so they won’t have to stand in that line Friday night, they can just head directly for the gate.”
To help alleviate traffic issues when entering and exiting the stadium, as well as parking concerns, district officials are encouraging fans to ride-share to the game. According to Leann Northway, USD 231 community relations coordinator, additional parking will be available at the north end of Madison Elementary School and on the lawn east of the high school at the corner of Buckeye and Madison Street.
“We strongly encourage carpooling to help minimize parking issues as much as possible,” Northway said. “We also encourage fans to come out early to beat the traffic crowd, tailgate with family and friends, and enjoy the atmosphere of the event.”
Following the game public safety officials will be on hand to direct fans leaving the stadium and provide some directional help to ensure the cooperative flow of traffic.
With the rivalry between the Saints and the ‘Blazers, the history of traded upsets they share, as well as allure of national television exposure, district officials are guaranteed to see a large crowd .
“This is a huge event for both Gardner Edgerton and St. Thomas Aquainis.
We’ve coordinated efforts with both administrations and public safety to ensure this will be a fun, exciting and memorable event for both schools,” Northway said.
