Gardner TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) collected more than 150 pounds of food to donate to the Gardner Multi-Service Center as a community service project.
The TOPS organization is one of the oldest weight loss groups in existence. The organization encourages using food exchanges with a 28-day food guide, keeping track of food intake, regular exercise, the plate method of monitoring food portions and attending weekly chapter meetings for hands-on group support.
TOPS helps members lose weight and fight off the risks of disease related to being overweight. Members who have lost weight have experienced lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and many other health issues.
Club members do not eat special meals or use supplements just sensible food.
On Sept. 18, the Shawnee TOPS group will host an area Fun Day. Several local group members are expected to attend. The fun day includes contests, awards, skits and a talent show.
