Calling all Parents, Calling all Parents (Part 1)
Cory Adams, Gardner’s resident fitness guru. (Did you read last weeks article about Six Packs?)
As many of you reading this article know Obesity is a huge problem in our country right now.  I must be honest, if your easily offended  then you might want to click off this page.  I am going to call some of you out and also challenge you to do some things that are not going to be easy.
First you must know that according to the CDC, Kansas ranks as the 16th fattest state in America.  When you as a reader and a Kansan read that does that make you angry, ashamed, or feel guilty?    Well it should.  Did you know that  United States spends hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on obesity related issues?
I went to a middle school this past school year to talk to kids about health and fitness.  And what I observed was astonishing.  I know its well reported that obesity is a problem but I challenge you to go to a local school just like I did and see how many kids there are overweight.  Look at them when you drop your kids off.  Although it was just an observation on my part but I would guess nearly half at my glance, I would have categorized as overweight.
What that says to me is that the problem is not fixing itself.  I honestly don’t blame the kids.  I blame you the parents!  Kids don’t do the grocery shopping, kids don’t drive themselves to every fast food joint in Gardner.  You Do!  As you may know most kids that have obese or overweight parents are also overweight or become overweight.  In one study done by the CDC they found that 80% of children that were considered obese at ages 10-15 were also obese at age 25.  Do you really expect them to have good eating habits when you don’t?  Do you really expect them to choose an apple over a bag of chips when you wouldn’t?    I bet some of you reading this article don’t even have an apple at home…but I bet you have a bag of chips.
Do you know what your kids are eating at your there school for lunch every day?  Do you really have any idea where the schools get there food or what’s in it?  If your like most people you assume that since it is at school it must be healthy.  Well think again!   I will provide a couple links at the bottom of this article for a movie I highly suggest you watch and the other is a video done by a guy named Jamie Oliver and this last spring he did an T.V special called Food Revolution.  I challenge you to watch the short clip and rent the movie.  They might change your life.
I hear this statement all the time, “ I don’t know what’s wrong with kids today, back when I was a kid I was always outside playing and riding my bike.”  And my response is that’s because you didn’t have an  Xbox, Nintendo , PSP or computer.  But then again you’re the one that bought the gaming systems or the computer games.  You’re the one that allows them to play it hours upon hours in there room while slamming Mountain Dew and Cheetos.  You know you do have the power to take it away or at least set some privacy codes so they cant play them at will.  When is the last time you saw a pick up game of football or baseball that wasn’t organized?  When was the last time you saw a game of tag , kickball or dodge ball?  We should be encouraging our kids to go outside.  And we should make them turn off the T.V, computer or gaming system.  We have to sometimes make that choice for them because they wont.
Now that we have recognized the problem we need to identify if this is you and what to do about it.  In the next 2 weeks I will help you not only  identify these issues but also provide some great info that will possibly help to change things for you and your family.  Please leave me your feedback and check out part 2 next week.
