An oil tank near 175th Street and Sunflower Road between Gardner and Edgerton burst into flames after being strike by lightning during storms Wednesday night. Fire crews from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 allowed the tanker, which landed in the roadway following the strike to burn off due to the risk of explosion.
In addition to the oil tank explosion, high winds and driving winds from the storm blew tree limbs into power lines and damaged electrical poles in Gardner. Electric utility officials estimate that between 4,000 and 5,000 customers lost power. Gardner Energy crews worked throughout the night to restore power to those customers.
