Wreck leaves woman in critical condition

A Gardner woman remains in the hospital following a car wreck at Center Street and 167th Street last week.
The wreck occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 13. A  dump truck, heading northbound on Center Street collided with a PT Cruiser, heading westbound on 167th Street.
The driver of the PT Cruiser, a Gardner woman, was taken to a trauma center with critical injuries where she remains. Police closed the intersection for more than two hours on Thursday afternoon as investigators from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office reconstructed the accident. Firefighters also put out a small fire in the engine compartment of the PT Cruiser.
According to Ileana Spalding,  Gardner Police Department spokesperson, police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Just recently, after this accident occurred, I was going south on Gardner Rd. and was in the process of making a left hand turn onto 183rd St. There two big gravel dump trucks going east on 183rd (I don’t believe these trucks should have been on 183rd St. since that street is NOT a truck route) and the first truck went right through the stop sign and made a left hand turn right in front of me to go south on Gardner Rd. If I had not been a defensive driver or wasn’t quite as far into my turn, I too could have ended up like this woman and ended up in critical condition or dead.

I have called the Gardner police before on these trucks being on 183rd St., west and east of Gardner Rd., and got a bunch of lip service from a sergeant and I finally said “just tell me if you are not going to address these trucks on 183rd St. and it will save both of us time”. I was just asking that they patrol that 183rd St. closely but I felt like after the call I pretty much wasted my time.

As far as I am concerned I don’t want those trucks on Gardner Rd./Center St. nor on Moonlight and the truck issue is not going to get better, but only worse. I also noted again today those trucks turning off of Gardner Rd. onto 191st St. heading toward the intermodal – just waiting on a serious accident on that bad intersection too.

Correction on above posting: The gravel dump trucks were going WEST on 183rd St.
