Two GE players up for awards

Two Gardner Edgerton High School football players have been named finalists for most outstanding Kansas City metro area players. Bubba Starling, GEHS quarterback, was named a finalist for the 28th Annual Thomas A. Simone Memorial Award for most outstanding football player in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Lucas Powell, GEHS lineman, was named a finalist for the 19th Annual Buck Buchanan Memorial Award for best lineman/linebacker in Missouri and Kansas top two athletic classes (MO 5-6, KS 5A-6A).
For the Simone award, Starling faces competitors Corbin Berkstresser from LeeÆs Summit; Cameron Coffman of Raymore-Peculiar; and Darrian Miller of Blue Springs. Miller also was a finalist last year.
For the Buchanan award, Powell faces Ian Allen of Blue Valley; Evan Boehm of LeeÆs Summit West; and Vidal Nelson of Staley.
The Simone Awards are voted on by the member head coaches of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association and a 12-member media committee. An awards ceremony will be held at the school of the Simone Award winner at 9 a.m. on Dec. 7. During the ceremony, Metro Sports will announce the Missouri and Kansas Coaches of the Year and the Gordon Docking Award for excellence in high school sports reporting. For the first time, an All-Simone Team will be unveiled during the awards ceremony.
